But “storage” for a supercar isn’t as simple as throwing a cover on it in a garage. These are high-performance machines that require specific care.
The Essential NYC Winter Storage Checklist
- Find a Climate-Controlled Facility: This is non-negotiable in NYC. A facility with humidity and temperature control is essential to protect your car’s leather interior, sensitive electronics, and paint.
- Detail and Protect: Give the car a thorough wash and wax before storage. This removes any grime, bird droppings, or contaminants that can damage the paint if left for months.
- Fill the Tank & Add Stabilizer: A full tank of gas prevents moisture from condensing inside the tank, which can lead to rust. Add a quality fuel stabilizer to prevent the gasoline from degrading and gumming up the fuel system.
- Connect a Battery Tender: Modern supercars are packed with electronics that create a constant, low-level drain on the battery. A battery tender (or “trickle charger”) will keep the battery topped off and healthy, ensuring it starts right up in the spring.
- Tires and Parking Brake: Inflate the tires to the recommended “storage” pressure (often slightly higher than normal) to prevent flat spots. Do not engage the parking brake; this can cause the brake pads to fuse to the rotors. Use wheel chocks instead.
